What do health, beauty and love have in common?
You guessed it right – we desire them. To promote health issues people come out with great ideas, as fashion shows (the beauty). Then they add love and make outfits from… condoms.
This October, the Planned Parenthood of Central Ohio will be hosting an exciting event, their second annual Proper Attire “Condom Couture” Fashion Show. Students from the Columbus College of Art & Design will be competing for cash prizes in a runway show where the clothing is made using condoms.
However, this organization wasn’t the first group to plan events like this, and many events in the last few years have involved dresses made out of condoms. Interestingly, most of these events have also been linked to AIDS awareness.
Back in 2006, Brazilian artist Adriana Bertini began exhibiting dresses made out of condoms in an event called Dress Up Against AIDS, which appeared in a number of cities, including Chicago and Los Angeles.
During 2007, students at a university in Oregon held the University Condom Fashion Show as part of World AIDS Day, which was essentially the same type of event as the one coming to Ohio in October. This event had over 250 people attending and dozens of participants. The event was so successful that, in December of 2008, they held the same event again.
In 2008 the “Condom Couture” charity fashion show was taken place in San Francisco. One of Project Runway contestants Jack Mackenroth designed a beautiful wedding dress. It was made from condoms and proceeds from the show were donated to HIV-treatment information programs.
Jack Mackenroth was also a presenter at Academy of Art University where fashion students created outfits made of condoms for Project Informs Evening of Hope: A Night of Lifesaving Fashion.
Overall, these events generally attract a crowd and help teach people about the importance of condom use in order to prevent diseases such as AIDS.
Condom couture fashion show dedicated to AIDS awareness was a success on UT Austin campus in 2009.
A benefit for Nebraska AIDS project was done in 2009.
