Vatican and Condom Vending Machines

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

Pregnancy and STDs among teenagers became serious issues dealt with all over the world.  One million teenagers become pregnant every year. Media, music, society teach our teenagers that sex is an ordinary part of teenager’s life. There is only one solution – sex education. To educate young generation about safe sex should be a common task for schools, parents, community.

Keplero High school in Rome decided to be the first one to install a condom vending machine as part of educational process of safe sex. It created a squall of opinions. Catholic Church claimed that accessibility of condoms pushes teenagers to have sex.

“This is not about stimulating the use of condoms or intercourse,” Antonio Panaccione, the school headmaster, told The Associated Press. “On the contrary, it’s about prevention and education.”

Cardinal Agostino Vallini, said it “cannot be approved by Rome’s ecclesiastical community or by Christian families who are seriously concerned with the education of their children.”

Vatican does not think that condom use will help to prevent pregnancies or STDs among teenagers. In their opinion, moral issues and education are much more important.

Piero Uroda, the leader of Italy’s association of Catholic pharmacists, said condoms were to blame for greater than before number of rapes.

50 Cent tried to make new condom

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Safe sex campaigns are usually associated with condoms distribution.  A common thing is to have a custom logo on a condom wrapper with some kind of AIDS/STD awareness expression. Sometimes celebrities are contributing in those campaigns just by allowing using their images or names.

Famous artist, rapper, performer 50 Cent had a great idea about worldwide safe sex campaign Wrap It Up. He wanted to make a new condom brand by applying sex-boosting ingredients to the condom. It would bring more pleasure and sexual satisfaction to safe sex with condom. Unfortunately, the idea failed to become reality. Scientists were not able to come up with a possible result.

“I was looking for the opportunity to create a new safe sex campaign. The Wrap It Up campaign is something that is used so often, it wasn’t effective anymore. So I thought this is a great opportunity for me to get involved,” said artist according to news articles.

I would love to express my gratitude to 50 Cent, just for trying to make a difference in a global fight for safe sex awareness.

Curious couple

Latest statistics show that sexually transmitted diseases are spreading among teens in USA faster than before.  It is especially sad, because three well treatable STDs, such as Chlamydia, Gonorrhea and Syphilis are among them.

It happened partially because of a wrong approach to sexual education among young generation. Abstinence only sex education is not working!

Don’t we know that a forbidden fruit is always sweet?

Statistics published by Reuters are devastating:

- 100,000 more occurrences of Chlamydia showed up in 2008 versus 2007.

- Teen aging girls have the most cases of Chlamydia and Gonorrhea (409,531) than age group of women.

- 71 % Gonorrhea and around 50% of Chlamydia and Syphilis cases are accounted among African-American community.

- Syphilis cases in women group is 36% higher in 2008 comparing to 2007

According to John Douglas, director of the division of sexually transmitted diseases at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “We have among the highest rates of STDs of any developed country in the world.”

“We are not honestly and openly dealing with this issue and it’s the larger issue of sexual health,” said John Douglas. He specifically mentioned the importance of condom use,  regular STD testing and Sexual Education.

Monday, January 26th, 2009

The entire world turned upside down. However, no matter what is going outside of our persona, we are still coming back to our own world, related to the needs and necessities of everyday life. In addition, no matter how old are you, the issues about safe sex are getting your attention. It is about your teen aging kids, relatives, friends or you. Majority of us are intimidated to discuss that subject. The thing is, even with creative media campaigns and popular events promotions, the message is still not wide spread.  New Ideas of promoting Condoms use are really different from just regular discussions. We happened to read an article on Safe sex ideas that raise eyebrows by Meghan Holohan. The article is about different ways to promote safe sex products. We found it very interesting. Please, take a moment and read it.

How the condom is made

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

I was recently browsing through different sites and looking for an interesting video about condoms. With my surprise, I found very informative one on The following video is about the entire process of making condoms.

I mesmerized by watching it, because I never thought how much talent, knowledge and energy is involved in such a simple thing as making a condom. Especially interesting was the part where they explain how the condom tested for leakage.

Condom is an ancient creation from 2000 years back in history. During the history of humanity changes were made in the technological process, materials (from natural skin to latex or polyurethane) . But the idea, the purpose and basic shape are still the same.

How many more human inventions do you know what are still around after all those years?

Condom was and still is the best method of prevention from unwanted pregnancy, AIDS and STD.

Durex Commercial is taking a hit on YouTube

Thursday, January 15th, 2009

What a wonderful idea – to make a commercial about condom use without having actual people involved! It makes you laugh and it cheers you up. We are so used to the same boring talk about condoms, safe sex and different issues related to it. In addition, here we go – very innocent balloon figurines deliver the message just fine! Durex Balloon condom commercial is by far a winner. The only thing I did not like is the sound of rubbers friction. It seems that they can use some lubes. However, I guess it is not about senses; it is about what is making it work. Love it!
